Saint Waldetrudis, also known as Waudru or Waltrude, was born in the 7th century into a wealthy and deeply holy family in what is now northern France or Belgium. Her parents, Saints Walbert and Bertille, were known for their virtue, and her sister, Saint Aldegonde of Maubeuge, became a renowned abbess. From the beginning, Waldetrudis was surrounded not only by nobility, but by a strong example of faith and devotion that would shape the course of her life.
She married Vincent Madelgarius, Count of Hainault, a man of influence who shared her growing desire for holiness. Together they raised four children—Landericus, Dentelin, Aldetrude, and Madelberte—each of whom would later be honored among the saints. Their household became a remarkable example of Christian family life, where faith was not simply professed, but lived.
After the tragic death of their young son Dentelin, Waldetrudis and her husband felt a deeper call to give themselves entirely to God. In a decision that reflected both sacrifice and trust, they agreed to separate in order to pursue religious life. Around 656, her husband entered the monastery he had founded at Hautmont, embracing the life of a monk. Waldetrudis soon followed this calling in her own way, establishing a convent at Châteaulieu, near the place where the city of Mons would later grow.
Although she founded the convent, she did not seek recognition or authority. Instead, she chose to live humbly as one of the sisters, dedicating herself to prayer, fasting, and quiet acts of love. She endured personal trials, including slander and spiritual struggles, yet remained steadfast in her faith. Over time, her perseverance was rewarded with deep interior peace and a reputation for holiness that spread far beyond her community.
Waldetrudis is especially remembered for her extraordinary generosity. Rather than clinging to her wealth, she used it as a means of serving others. She cared for the poor and the sick, but her most striking work was in freeing captives. She would personally pay the ransom for those held in bondage, carefully weighing out silver from her own resources to secure their freedom. When they were released, she asked nothing in return except that they return home to their families. In this, she lived the Gospel in a radical and tangible way, treating everything she owned as a gift entrusted to her by God.
She died around April 9, circa 688, in Mons, Belgium, and was immediately honored as holy by the faithful. She is now venerated as the patron saint of Mons, where her relics are preserved in the Collegiate Church of Saint Waudru. Each year, her shrine is carried through the streets in a solemn procession, a lasting sign of the devotion she inspired. She is also remembered as a powerful intercessor, especially in times of illness, childbirth, and epidemics.
The life of Saint Waldetrudis offers a clear and challenging witness. She shows that holiness is not limited to one path, but can flourish in marriage, in family life, and in religious vocation. Above all, she reminds us that everything we have belongs to God, and that true freedom is found not in holding on, but in giving generously for the sake of others.
